On Tingri, a year after the earthquake, I heard many moving sounds—the babbling of children, the whistling of the wind on the football field. They announced the beginning and also headed off to distant places.

Tsering Lhaba, the first newborn from the epicenter, has grown into a toddler who is learning to speak and walk under the care of his parents, fellow villagers, and officials.

Inside the house, a stove burned cow dung, and a baby slept soundly in a cradle nearby. The arrival of their youngest daughter, Yangjin Lhamo, was the greatest joy for Tsering Lhamo's family in Tonglai Village, Changsuo Township, after moving into their new house.

In the past year, more than 3,000 newborns have been born in disaster-stricken counties such as Dingri and Lazi. The new lives and new homes have illuminated the happy lives of countless families.
