SEOUL, Jan. 12 (Xinhua) -- The South Korean government on Tuesday established a joint military and police task force to investigate the recent drone incident.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the National Investigation Headquarters of the Korean National Police Agency informed the media that a special task force of approximately 30 people has been formed and is conducting an investigation into the drone incident. The task force consists of about 20 police officers and about 10 military personnel, with the director of the Security Investigation Bureau serving as the team leader.
The National Investigation Headquarters stated that the special task force will investigate the matter swiftly and thoroughly to uncover the truth behind the incident.
According to a report by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) on the 10th, a spokesperson for the General Staff of the Korean People's Army issued a statement on the 9th, saying that following the drone intrusion incident over Pyongyang in October 2024, South Korea launched a drone to violate North Korean airspace at the beginning of the new year, once again committing a serious provocation.
South Korean Defense Minister Ahn Gyu-baek responded on the 10th, stating that the drone in the photos released by North Korea was not a type owned by the South Korean military. The South Korean Ministry of National Defense also confirmed that the military did not use drones on the dates announced by North Korea.
South Korean President Lee Jae-myung on the 10th instructed the formation of a joint military and police investigation team to investigate the possible "intrusion" of civilian drones into North Korea, stating that if true, it would be a serious crime threatening peace and national security on the Korean Peninsula.
