Manila, January 12 (China News Service reporter Zhang Xinglong) -- Cebu City Mayor Nestor Archibald announced on the 12th that a landfill collapse that occurred in the city recently has resulted in 8 deaths and 28 people are still missing.
Heavy rains in Cebu City recently triggered landslides, causing a massive collapse at a local landfill on the 8th. Philippine media reported that the collapsed garbage pile was approximately 20 stories high.
The Cebu City government previously reported that more than 100 workers were operating at the landfill when the accident occurred, and dozens went missing afterward. Nestor Archibald said on the 12th that the accident also injured 18 people, who are currently receiving treatment in hospital.
Nestor Archwar stated that the scene remains in "rescue mode." However, local fire department officials pointed out that after being buried under tons of garbage for more than three days, the chances of the missing persons surviving are "extremely slim."
Philippine Senator Imé Marcos on the 12th called on the Senate to launch an investigation into the incident, focusing on whether the landfill in question complied with the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act and other relevant laws and regulations. She stated that the investigation would aim to clarify responsibilities, assess the effectiveness of current waste management policies, and promote the establishment of a more robust safety mechanism.
