SEOUL, Jan. 12 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's largest opposition party, the People Power Party, has decided to change its name ahead of local councilor and local government leadership elections on June 3. The report states that the party name, formerly known as the "Future United Party," which was adopted in September 2020, will be phased out after approximately five and a half years.

The report also stated that Chung Hee-yong, secretary-general of the People Power Party, announced the decision at a Supreme Council meeting on the 12th. The new party name will be solicited from the public after extensive consultation with party members, and will be finalized next month after completing procedures such as amending the party constitution.

The report stated that the decision was based on the results of a recent survey of responsible party members who paid their dues on time. The survey showed that the majority of respondents supported changing the party's name.
